Turkmenistan

Turkmenistan is a former member of the Soviet Socialist Republic. It is located in Central Asia and covers over 488,000 sq. km. Deserts and flat plains occupy 90% of the land, including Karakum, one of the world’s largest sand deserts. Turkmenistan shares borders with Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Afghanistan, Iran and the Caspian Sea.

The climate is one of extremes; because of the desert land, temperatures vary widely. Summers are hot, dry and long, with maximum temperatures in the hottest areas sometimes approaching 50°C. The January temperatures in its capital, Ashgabat, average 4°C. Rainfall throughout the country is low.

Pre-travel Preparation Will Help Protect Your Health While You Are Away

Pre-travel preparation will help keep you safe and healthy while you are away. Please consult the Travel Doctor-TMVC before you travel overseas. We will provide specific recommendations tailored to your itinerary. Our doctors will assess and advise you on your risks, and recommend appropriate vaccination and medication to minimise your risk of becoming seriously unwell on your trip.

Altitude Sickness

Altitude illness affects many travellers visiting mountainous regions or undertaking high altitude treks, in some cases with very serious consequences. Medication can be used to facilitate the process of acclimatisation to the rarefied atmosphere at high altitudes. Before your departure, it is important to discuss your specific risk with a doctor that understands the effects of high altitude travel.

Cold Climates

Cold temperatures are not something to be trifled with; it is critical that you are dressed appropriately and know the warning signs for frostbite and hypothermia.

Insect Avoidance

In many countries, insects carry dangerous diseases. While mosquitoes pose the main risk to travellers, bites from sand flies, ticks, fleas and bedbugs can also transmit diseases. Ensure you are prepared and read up on our insect avoidance tips.
