Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland shares a border to its south with the Republic of Ireland and is part of the United Kingdom. Northern Ireland was created in 1921, when the Government of Ireland Act 1920 partitioned Ireland into Northern Ireland and Southern Ireland. A feature of the country’s geography is Lough Neagh, the largest freshwater lake on the island of Ireland and in the British Isles.

Northern Ireland has a temperate maritime climate and is wetter in the west than the east. The weather is unpredictable at all times of the year, and the seasons are less pronounced than in interior Europe. Average maximum temperatures in Belfast are 6.5°C in January and 17.5°C in July.
